What models actually get paid in South Africa

6 min read

The most common question new models ask is what to charge. There is no single answer, because in South Africa your fee is made of two separate things: your time, and the usage the client buys. Here is how to think about both.

Typical day rates by job type

E-commerce and catalogue: R1,500 to R4,000 per day. High volume, straightforward, often repeat work with the same retailer.

Commercial print and digital campaigns: R5,000 to R15,000 per day depending on the brand and the usage period.

Runway and fashion week: often lower than commercial work, R1,000 to R5,000 per show, but valuable for your book and your profile.

Television commercials: the day rate is only part of it — usage and broadcast rights typically dwarf the shoot fee.

Fitness, beauty and parts work: R2,000 to R8,000 per day, with specialised parts work sometimes higher because the client needs specific features.

Usage is where the money is

Usage covers where the images run, in which territories, on which media and for how long. Twelve months of South African social media is not the same as three years of worldwide print, out-of-home and broadcast.

Quote your day rate, then quote usage separately. If a client wants broader or longer usage later, that is a new fee, not a favour.

Extras you should be charging for

Travel outside your city, overtime beyond an agreed day length, wardrobe fittings on a separate day, and cancellation within 24 or 48 hours of the shoot are all normally billable. Agree them before you arrive on set.

How to quote without losing the job

Ask three questions before naming a number: what is the shoot, what is the usage, and what is the budget. Many clients will tell you the budget outright, which saves everyone time.

Publishing a guide day rate on your profile filters out clients who cannot afford you and speeds up the ones who can. It is a guide, not a contract — you can still negotiate per job.

Questions people ask

Should I put my day rate on my profile?
Yes. A guide rate saves time on both sides and tends to increase serious enquiries. You can still negotiate per booking based on usage.
What are usage rights?
Usage is the licence a client buys to use your images — the media, territory and duration. It is charged separately from your day rate.
Do freelance models get paid more than agency models?
Freelance models keep their whole fee, while agencies typically take 20 percent or more, but agencies may access larger campaigns. Many models do both.
