How to get scouted as a model in South Africa

Being scouted is mostly a matter of being findable and being consistent. Scouts in South Africa work through Instagram, through directories, through open calls and through other models — not by spotting people in shopping centres, whatever the stories say.
Make yourself findable
Scouts search. If your name, city and category don't appear anywhere searchable, you can only be found by people who already know you exist.
Have one place that shows your face clearly, your stats, your city and a way to contact you — a directory listing, a simple page, or at minimum a public Instagram profile with real photos and your measurements in the bio.
Use the words people search: your city, your category, the word model. 'Cape Town commercial model' is findable; a nickname and three emojis is not.
What to post if you want to be scouted
Clear, well-lit photographs of you as you actually look, at least some of them full length. Scouts are assessing proportion, not vibe.
Post consistently rather than perfectly. An account with twelve honest recent photos beats one with three heavily edited ones.
Keep a public account or at least a public portfolio — a locked profile can't be scouted.
Approaching agencies properly
Send digitals, stats, city and age in the first email, in the body of the message, with a plain subject line. No long story, no attachments that need downloading.
Check each agency's submission page and follow it exactly — most rejections are about not following instructions.
Silence is normal and isn't personal. Follow up once, after three weeks, then move on to the next one.

- No. Many South African models work directly with brands, photographers and production companies, keeping the full fee. An agency adds reach and negotiation, and takes commission for it.
- What age do models get scouted?
- Fashion scouting skews young, but commercial casting runs across every age — brands need people who look like their customers, including models in their forties, fifties and beyond.
- Does being scouted mean I'll get work?
- No. Being scouted means being noticed; work follows from castings, reliability and a portfolio that matches what clients need.
