A casting is a short, practical meeting — usually under ten minutes. Knowing the shape of it removes most of the nerves and nearly all of the avoidable mistakes.

Before you go

Confirm the address, the time, the client and who you'll be meeting. Ask what to wear — if there's no guidance, wear something fitted and plain.

Bring your digitals, your portfolio if you have one, and your stats written down. Bring your own water and expect to wait.

Arrive ten minutes early. Late to a casting reads as late to a shoot, and shoot days cost thousands an hour.

On the day

You'll sign in, possibly fill in a form with your stats and availability, and wait. You may be filmed saying your name, your agency or your city, and turning slowly.

You may be asked to try a garment, walk, or hold a product. Do exactly what's asked, simply — casting directors are looking for someone easy to direct.

Be pleasant to everyone in the room, including whoever runs the door. Bookings in South Africa are a small-world business.

Afterwards

Being put 'on option' or 'on hold' means you're a contender for a date — keep it free, and tell them immediately if that changes.

Most castings end in silence. It rarely reflects your ability; the client has a specific look, a specific size and a specific budget.

Keep a note of who you saw and when. Casting directors remember the reliable ones and come back to them.
